Friday, 8th October 2010 will see some 97 lots of medals and related militaria come under that hammer at Stafforshire auction house Cuttlestones’ Collectors’ Sale. Items date from both the World Wars and include firearms, cap badges, bronze busts of pilots and individual medals.

There is also a strong set of lots in the form of a series of medal packs each of which, in addition to a collection of medals, includes detailed research into the life of the serviceman to whom they were awarded (such as photographs, death certificates, service histories and conflict accounts) all consigned by a single private collector.

Just one example of the lots in this carefully collated collection is a series of medals and ephemera related to Flight Sergeant Trevor Thomas Turnbull. The lot comprises Sgt Turnbull’s medals – including the France & Germany Star, a Defence Medal, a DFM George I, a DFM in box of issue and a 1939 – 1945 war medal – alongside two photographs, his navigation logbook, release book and some additional research. While this individual lot carries an estimate of between £2,600 – £2,900 estimates for all lots within the medals and militaria section range from £10 – £3,500 meaning there’s something for all collectors.

MD & Head Auctioneer at Cuttlestones, Ben Gamble, said: “This is a really strong military section and we’re delighted to be able to present this to buyers at our first official Collectors’ Sale. It represents a rare opportunity to procure an entire collection that someone has evidently invested great amounts of time and money to amass and will undoubtedly attract interest from collectors of medals and militaria from far and wide. Those less knowledgeable about military history but with a more general passion for antiques may be interested to hear that we also have some ‘caterpillar club’ badges in the militaria section, as recently featured on the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.”

The sale will take place at Cuttlestones’ sale room in Penkridge, Staffordshire from 10am on Friday, 8th October 2010, with viewing from 10am – 7pm on Thursday, 7th October. The catalogue will be available online from Friday, 1st October – visit www.cuttlestones.co.uk or call 01785 714905 for further details. For those unable to attend the sale commission, telephone and online bidding via www.the-saleroom.co.uk are available.

The Order of Glory, which was modelled closely upon the Tsarist Cross of St. George, had three degrees. A person initially received the third degree, and would subsequently be promoted to higher degrees for further acts of bravery; one who received all three degrees was called polniy kavaler ordenov slavy (full Cavalier of the Order of Glory). In total only 2620 gold first class orders were awarded and attained this Full Cavalier status.

The Order of Glory became defunct upon the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 2000, the Cross of St. George was revived to serve the same purpose of rewarding bravery in NCO’s and enlisted service personnel.

The rare Order of Glory medal has been valued at £4,000-£6,000 and will feature in the Silver, Plated Ware, Coins & Medals auction to be held on 30 November at Fellows & Sons auction rooms in Birmingham.

A 20ct gold Life Saving Medal designed by CH Lovett for Tiffany & Co, awarded to Alfred N Bevan in 1911 is going under the hammer on 30 November at Birmingham based auctioneers Fellows & Sons.

The medal was presented to Alfred N Beavan, captain of the steamship ‘Brika’ for the rescue of three seamen from their sinking ship ‘Theresa’ by the Life Saving Benevolent Association of New York (LSBA). The ship had been found in heavy sea 120 miles off St Michael’s in the Azores.

The seamen were from Huelva, Spain and had set sail from Providence to fish off the North West coast of Africa – a storm had almost sunk the vessel. Captain Jauquia Réné, José Fonseca and Manuel Andredo arrived as shipwrecked mariners in New York on the Brika on 2 August 1911. The Brika herself was torpedoed and sunk on 13 March 1917 by a German U-47 boat commanded by Günther Prien.

The medal had been spotted in a consignment of gold which was due to be scrapped by Liverpool jewellers, W J Edwards.

Margot Walker and Peter Edwards, Partners of W J Edwards said: “This medal simply stood out as it was in impeccable condition when we found it. We realised that it must have been something special when we read the inscription on the back of the medal and simply had to find out more about it.”

Stephen Whittaker, Managing Partner, Fellows & Sons said: “This Life Saving Medal is unique and carries an interesting history. Currently there is a tendency for jewellers to scrap gold but I am delighted that W J Edwards spotted the potential interest of this medal for collectors both here in the UK and the United States”

The medal has an estimate of £2,000 – £3,000 and will be sold with copies of the account from the New York Times in the Silver, Plated Ware, Coins & Medals auction on Monday 30 November.
